Brangelina slide on over. You are not the first.

Orgininally written in 1915 "Lili Marleen", a haunting German love song, did not become well known until after 1941.

There are many different spellings of name Marleen.

The words were written by a fellow named Hans Leip. Conscripted into the army Leip combined the names of his girlfriend and another female friend to come up with Lili Marleen.

In 1938 Norbert Schultz put the soldier's poem to music. In 1981 the film Lili Marleen was released but received very little recognition.

It's an interesting story and more can be learned on how this tune became popular by the rest of Europe and the West at Wikipedia: Lili Marleen.

In the meantime enjoy Vera Lynn version of Lili Marleen as posted on Youtube. But you have been warned it's addicting.
